Gerunds after prepositions

Gerunds are words that are formed with verbs but act as nouns.
1. They can function as subjects, direct objects, objects of the preposition, and predicate nouns
2. Gerunds and infinitives can replace a noun in a sentence
3. Gerund = the present participle (-ing) form of the verb
  1. Example
    1. They went straight to sleep after arriving
    2. Try to rest before travelling
    3. 7. Let’s go dancing at the club tonight.
4. Infinitive = to + the base form of the verb, e.g., to sing, to dance, to run
  1. Infinitives will NEVER be used after prepositions ONLY GERUNDS
5. Whether you use a gerund or an infinitive depends on the main verb in the sentence.
6. Rules
  1. Gerunds can be used after certain verbs including enjoy, fancy
  2. After prepositions of place and time.
  3. To replace the subject or object of a sentence
  4. Prepositions are followed by a noun clause
Present participles do not act as nouns
1. they act as modifiers or complete progressive verbs.
2. To find gerunds in sentences, just look for a verb + ing that is used as a noun
