Christmas Carol Quotes
Marley was dead, to begin with. There as no doubt whatever about that.
Establishes early on this fact otherwise nothing will come of the future story. Dickens himself even makes this point.
Scrooge was his sole executor, his sole administrator, his sole assign, his sole residuary legatee, his sole friend and sole mourner.
Repition of sole shows how lonely Marley was. Scrooge has not yet learned from this.
Oh! But he was a tight fisted hand at the grindstone, Scrooge. A squeezing, wreching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous old sinner!
Verb list gives the impression that the general public have a great opinion on Scrooge. He is a well known figure.
Reference to grindstone shows that he is grinding down his employees.
