Resumo de Recurso
Network
disadvantages
viruses can spread to other computers throughout a computer network
purchasing the network cabling and file servers can be expensive
there is a danger of hacking, particularly with wide area networks
managing a large network is complicated, requires training and a network manager usually needs to be employed
advantages
sharing devices such as printers saves money
site licences are likely to be cheaper than buying several standalone licences
files can easily be shared between users
network users can communicate by email and instant messenger
data is easy to backup as all the data is stored on the file server
security is good - users cannot see other users' files unlike on stand-alone machines
Bus Topology
advantages
fast (low chance of collisions)
it is easy to set up, handle, and implement
low chance of catastrophic failure (a broken cable only takes out one computer, the rest of the network is fine)
disadvantages
the cable length is limited. this limits the number of network nodes that be connected.
each device on the network sees all the being transmitted, thus posing a security risk.
it is heavily dependent on the central bus. a fault in the bus leads to network failure.
Ring Topology
advantages
the traffic is unidirectional and the data transmission is high speed
in comparison to a bus, a ring is better at handling load
the configuration makes it easy to identify faults in network nodes
disadvantages
the failure of a single node in the network can cause the entire network to fail
the movement or changes made to network nodes affect the entire netwotk's performance
there is heavy dependency on the wire connecting the network nodes in the ring
IP Address
computers on a network also need an address to identify them
when a computer is added to a network it is assigned an IP Address
the IP Address is unique value assigned to each computer on a network
each IP address on a network must be unique
the IP Address is a 32-bit binary value. this means its made up 32 1s and 0s
