          1. Launched King as leader of the civil rights movement and attracted media attention

            1. To test Brown desegregation and speed up desegregation in schools
              1. 9 black students put into white schools
                1. Federal intervention, all schools closed in Little Rock, and the NAACP took it to court and made it illegal to prevent desegregation

                  2. Greensboro sit-ins 1960
                    1. To gain media attention and put pressure on companies to desegregate public spaces (direct action)
                      1. As a peaceful protest, sat in the white area of Woolworths cafe

                              1. Made the Commission keep records of black voters, but it only increased black voters by 3%
