General Elections determine the make up of the HofC rather than the executive
General Elections usually determine which party is in power

Turnout in recent elections has been lower than post-war average
Influence over policies
In theory it allows citizens to have their policy preferences heard
Reality is they are limited
Election defeat can force a party to rethink unpopular policies

General election every 5 years holds government accountable for its performance in office
