Blood Pressure-
Contraction of the heart
muscle, which pumps
blood through the body,
and the resistance of the
walls of the vessels
through which the blood
flows
Systolic Blood
Pressure- Higher of
the two numbers,
measures the
pressure in the
arteries when the
heart beats
Diastolic Blood
Pressure- The lower of
the two numbers,
measures the pressure
in the arteries when
the heart is resting
A blood pressure
reading consists of the
systolic measurement
"over" the diastolic
measurement, recorded
in millimeters of
mercury (mm Hg) by a
sphygmomanometer

The Ways of Knowing
(Empirics, Ethics,
Personal, Aesthetics,
Emancipatory)
Emancipatory-
Ability to notice and
investigate social
injustices
Critical reflection
of blood pressure
reading and social
factors affecting
accuracy of blood
pressure reading
Aesthetics-
Awareness of the
immediate situation
including the
patients situation
and their unique
cirumstance
Establishing rapport in
a nurse-patient
relationship and the
patient being able to
confide in the nurse about
factors that may affect
blood pressure
(nicotine, anxiety)
Personal-Knowledge
dervived from
personal
understanding and
empathy
Understanding that a
patient with hypertension
may feel frightened at the
thought of possible
strokes or heart attacks
Ethics-Awareness of
moral choices and
questions (right or
wrong)
Automatic blood
pressure machines are
not always accurate
and available
Empirics-Factural
Knowledge from
science that can be
empirically verified
Knowledge of
anatomy of the
heart, normal
blood pressure
reading,
hypertension,
hypotension
Assessment-
Establishing data,
validating data,
communicating
data
Diagnosis-Interpreting
patient and data,identifying
patient health strengths and
problems, formulating
nursing diagnosis
Planning-Selecting
nursing measures
and
communicating
care plan
Intervention-Carrying
out care plan and
documenting care
given
Evaluation- Measuring
how well the client has
achieved desired goals,
identify factors
affecting the patient's
success or failure,
modifying care plan if
needed
