Psychoanalysis
  1. Techniques
    1. Free Association
      1. The patient expresses thoughts as they come to mind, even if they seem unimportant or irrelevant.
        1. Freud believed the value of this lied in the fact that these thoughts came from the unconscious, and thus from the factors which the analysis tries to uncover.
          1. This ,thus, should reveal areas of conflict and bring them into consciousness.
          2. Therapist Interpretation
            1. The therapist listens carefully as the client talks. The therapist attempts to make conclusions about the sources of the problem. The client can sometimes offer resistance to the connections made.
              1. Alternatively, the client can display transference, where they recreate emotions and conflict and transfer them onto the therapist. Essentially acting.
              2. Working Through
                1. This isn't brief. It often occurs 4-5 times a week. The patient and therapist will examine the same issues over and over again to gain greater clarity conserning the causes of their behaviour.
                  1. This also allows the patient to gain sight into how the past has influence on their actions in the future; which should help them make positive changes in later life.It also helps the patient to gain greater control of their life and a belief that they have control over what can happen. This minimises the influence of inner conflicts on their behaviour.
                2. What Is It?
                  1. All actions are caused by unconscious thoughts and repressed memories
                    1. A form of Psychotherapy, designed by Sigmund Freud to bring unconscious memories to the conscious.
                      1. It works by having a therapist to help the client trace these factors to their origins and then helps them deal with them.
                      2. Evaluation
                        1. Strengths
                          1. Effectiveness
                            1. Length of Treatment
                            2. Weaknesses
                              1. Theoretical Limitations
                                1. Appropriateness
                                  1. Repressed Memories or False Memories?
