Homeostasis
  1. Homeostasis - the three factors that need to be maintained
    1. Water content of the body
      1. Heat
        1. Sugar concentration
        2. Negative Feedback: When a change away from the ideal, triggers a reaction designed to bring conditions back to normal
          1. Temperature
            1. Light intensity
            2. Vasodilation
              1. Vasoconstriction
                1. Vasoconstriction is where the
                2. Vasodilation

                  Anotações:

                  • Vasodilation is where the blood capillaries closes to the skin dilate in order to maximise heat loss when the body is too hot.
                  1. Vasoconstriction

                    Anotações:

                    • Vasoconstriction is where the blood capillaries further away from the skin dilate in order to minimise heat loss and retain thermal energy.
                    1. Cooling mechanisms
                      1. Evaporation of sweat

                        Anotações:

                        • Cools the skin and creates heat loss.
                        1. Radiation of heat from the blood
                          1. Hairs lie flat against the skin

                            Anotações:

                            • This means that the warm still doesn't get trapped between the hairs and the body gets cooler.
                          2. Warming mechanisms
                            1. Vasodilation

                              Anotações:

                              • The blood vessels don't dilate near to the skin in order to minimise heat loss across the epidermis.
                              1. Erect hairs

                                Anotações:

                                • They trap warm still air around the body.
                                1. Sweat glands don't make sweat

                                  Anotações:

                                  • So that the sweat doesn't cool the body.
                                  1. Shivering

                                    Anotações:

                                    • Also one of the warming mechanisms in order to warm the body.
