JPEG
1. Uses 24 bit for colours
2. Maximum of 16.7 million colours
3. Used for images with continuous colour (e.g. photos)
4. Uses compression
5. Transparency
6. Advantages
  1. Widely supported on the internet
  2. Can be opened and viewed in almost all viewing applications
  3. Compatible with all printers
7. Disadvantages
  1. When compressed looses quality
  2. Cannot have transparent backgrounds
  3. Doesn't support animation
GIF
1. Uses 8 bit for colour
2. Maximum of 256 colours
3. Uses compression
4. Used for simple graphics
5. Uses transparency
6. Advantages
  1. Most software supports it
  2. Can use transparency
  3. Doesn't loose quality when compressed
7. Disadvantages
  1. limited amount of colours (265)
  2. Can't correct colour backgrounds on gifs
  3. Takes up a lot of memory space
PNG
1. Creates compressed images without loosing quality
2. Uses 16 million Colours
3. Resulting file sizes are larger than GIF or JPEG
4. Advantages
  1. when compressed do not loose quality
  2. supports 24-bit colour
5. Disadvantages
  1. not as small of a file size as JPG images
  2. comes with a number of extension formats
TIFF
1. Bitmapped image format
2. Suited to scanned images, images wit continuous colours and photographs
3. Can be easily modified
4. Use any number of colours
5. Advantages
  1. good format to print in
  2. can be used on a variety of platforms e.g. windows and mac OS
  3. Supports different levels of depths from 1-32 bit
6. Disadvantages
  1. Has large file sizes
  2. no compression is used
  3. cameras cannot save many images in TIFF file format
PSD
1. Photoshop Documents
2. Produce very high quality images
3. No Compression
4. Large file sizes
5. Have slow upload and download speeds
6. Advantages
  1. allows layers
  2. can save significant amounts of information
7. Disadvantages
  1. very large file sizes because of no compression
  2. only available in Photoshop
  3. difficult to download/upload or email
BMP
1. Map of pixels
2. Supports millions of colours
3. File sizes are very large
4. Slow download speed
5. MS Paint files are saved as BMP
6. Photographs can also be saved as BMP
7. Advantages
  1. easy to create
  2. can be re-coloured
  3. Well known
8. Diadvantages
  1. If re-sized can loose quality
  2. requireed high-resolutions
  3. Can only be used on the platform that it is created on e.g. on microsoft
EPS
1. Standard format for importing and exporting PostScript files.
2. Can contain text, graphics and images
3. Contain small preview images
4. Photoshop can save bitmap images in this file format
5. Advantages
  1. ideal for importing into graphics software
  2. can be used on a variety of platforms e.g. transferred fro Mac OS to PC
6. Disadvantages
  1. Large file sizes
