THE SITUATION IN 1945
- August. 1945/ the world
was DOMINATED by
superpowers- USSR and USA
SUPERPOWERS:
a) Status arose, partly
from size of
country's territory &
pop.
b) Both USA & USSR were modern
powers following,
rapid/successful/industrialisation
under Stalin
c) US = more fertile and more
clement (of weather/mild)/gave it
an advantage over USSR whose
frozen wastes and vast swathes,
of unproductive land posed
problems for food production,
communications & resources.
d) Both countries/ made of of
diff. states and varied ethnic
mixes of peoples gathered
together over centuries of
expansion & conquest.
- Was a 'bi-polar'
world/ where gov. &
pop. fell under one or
other SUPERPOWER
influence & few were
neutral.
- Decisions in USA & USSR,
shaped the fate of
countries struggling to
recover from devastating
warfare.
UNITED NATIONS:
a) Churchill//Roosevelt
founded the UN
organisation, by signing
ATLANTIC
CHARTER-1941/laid out their
goals for post-world war.
b) Organisation =
intended to be an
effective peace-keeping
power with military
capability.
c) By 1945, 50 members
had signed UN charter,
formulated by
representatives of the
main Security Council.
