Advantages of using the scientific method
  1. EMPRICAL
    1. Data = gained through direct observation, experiment of experience
      1. Adavtange because.. gain concrete evidence for a theory - we can see it through people's experience
        1. For example: SSRI's are tested empricially
          1. Once the depressed individual has been given SSRI's, can observe their progression/ see if they improve their mood
    2. OBJECTIVE
      1. Advantage because.. less susceptible to bias + subjectivity
        1. Getting facts means we are more certain that the data is valid
          1. For example: Loftus + Palmer's experiment = objective
            1. Participants were asked for estimates of speed (mph) - these numbers could not be subjected in the conclusion
      2. FALSIFIABLE
        1. The null hypothesis is capable of being tested + supported
          1. We can test to see if a prediction of behaviour is wrong
            1. For example: Loftus + Palmer's null hypothesis = leading questions will not make a difference in the pts estimates of mph
              1. Using the scientific method, they were able to test this and saw that it was incorrect
              2. We cannot falsify Freud's theories about the unconscious mind because we can't test them
          2. CONTROLLED
            1. It is Less likely that confounding variables will impact the results
              1. Due to high level of control it is possible to establish cause and effect
                1. Many experiments using the scientific method (Loftus + Palmer, Milgram, Acsh) would have been able to control extraneous variables such as participant differences
                  1. They can be sure that their findings were not affected so are valid
            2. REPLICABLE
              1. Makes it very reliable
                1. Means other researchers can repeat the procedure + check for consistency in findings, +therefore validate previous findings
                  1. Asch used a standardised procedure therefore it is possible to replicate his study and test the reliability of his results
