War and Peace

World War 1
1. Britain refused to ignore the events of 4 August 1914, when Germany attacked France through Belgium. Within hours, Britain declared war on Germany
  1. Canada went to war as well because Canada was a self-governing dominion of the British Empire
2. Europe was the center of WW1, mostly surrounding Germany
3. The Triple Entente is made up of Britain, France and Russia. Canada was technically part of the Triple Entente because Canada was a self-governing dominion.
The War in Afghanistan
1. After the 11 September terrorist attacks, Minister of National Defence Art Eggleton advised Governor General Adrienne Clarkson to authorize more than 100 Canadian Forces soldiers on military exchange programs to take part in the war in Afghanistan
2. Because the United States and Canada are tight allies and neighboring countries, Canada supported the United States throughout the war with the Canadian Military fighting along their side
3. The war in Afghanistan started because Afghan leaders were ordered to hand over Osama Bin Laden. When the Taliban didn't do this, the United States decided they would use their armed forces
World War 2
1. Canada's military was active in the war, though most battles occurred in Italy, Northwestern Europe, and the North Atlantic.
2. Canada's allies included U.S., Britain, France, USSR, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Denmark, Greece, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, South Africa and Yugoslavia
3. The Canadian Military fought with Great Britain, but not under Great Britain. Canada declared war and fought as a lone independant country as opposed to World War 1, where we were only in the war because Canada was still recognized as a colony of Great Britain.
