DISTILLATION
  1. SIMPLE DISTILLATION
    1. IS USED TO SEPARATE A LIQUID FROM A SOLUTION
      1. HOW IT WORKS
        1. THE SOLUTION IS HEATED
          1. THE PART OF THE SOLUTION THAT HAS THE LOWEST BOILING POINT EVAPORATATES
            1. THE VAPOUR IS THEN COOLED, CONDENSES AND IS COLLECTED
              1. THE REST OF THE SOLUTION IS LEFT BEHIND IN THE FLASK
        2. YOU CAN USE SIMPLE DISTILLATION TO SEPARATE WATER FROM SEA WATER
          1. CAN ONLY USE IT IF THE LIQUIDS HAVE A VERY DIFFERENT BOILING POINT
          2. FRACTIONAL DISTILLATION
            1. USED TO SEPARATE A MIXTURE OF LIQUIDS
              1. HOW IT WORKS
                1. PUT MIXTURE IN A FLASK AND STICK A FRACTIONATING COLUMN ON TOP
                  1. HEAT
                    1. THE LIQUID WITH THE LOWEST BOILING POINT EVAPORATES FIRST
                      1. WHEN THE TEMPERATURE ON THE THERMOMETER MATCHES THE BOILING POINT OF THIS LIQUID IT WILL REACH THE TOP OF THE COLUMN
                        1. LIQUIDS WITH HIGHER BOILING POINTS MIGHT ALSO START TO EVAPORATE BUT THE COLUMN IS COOLER AT THE TOP SO THEY WILL ONLY GET PART OF THE WAY UP BEFORE CONDENSING AND RUNNING BACK DOWN TOWARDS THE FLASK
                          1. WHEN THE FIRST LIQUID HAS BEEN COLLECTED YOU RAISE THE TEMPERATURE UNTIL THE NEXT ONE REACHES THE TOP
