Adverbials

Are used to describe or change the meaning or a verb, adjective, or another adverb in phrases of how, when, where and why.
1. Adverbial Phrases
  1. Show how the verb is carried out in the sentence by using a few words.
    1. Manner
      1. Describes the way in which something is done.
        In a funny way, in a civilized way.
        The lion roared in a threatening way.
    2. Time
      1. Describes when something occurs.
        On the school holidays, in July last year.
        On the weekend I went to Sydney.
    3. Place
      1. Describes where something is done.
        At my school, at my friends house.
        Tonight I'm staying at my cousins house.
    4. Reason/Purpose
      1. Expresses why something is done.
        Because it was fun, to win the race.
        I worked on Sunday because I got paid double time.

  1. Show how the verb is carried out in the sentence by using a single word.
    1. Manner
      1. Describe the way in which something is done.
        Quickly, slowly, rapidly, gradually.
        Quickly whisk the eggs then gradually pour into the dry mixture.
    2. Time
      1. Describes when something occurs.
        Yesterday, tomorrow, before, after.
        Yesterday I went to the aquarium.
    3. Place
      1. Describes where something is done.
        There, here.
        My friends came here because we have a pool.
    4. Reason/Purpose
      1. Express why something is done.
        Therefore, resulting in, consequently.
        I ate two pieces of cake, consequently I felt sick.
