Parts of Speech
  1. Two categories
    1. Major class: -nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs
      1. They carry most of the content or meaning of a sentence.
      2. Minor class: -auxiliary verbs, prepositions, pronouns, deteminers, conjuctions
        1. Plays a more structural role in a sentence
      3. Nouns: Is the name of a person, place or thing
        1. 3 Types
          1. Common nouns
            1. nouns referring to a kind of person, thing, or idea
              1. Count / noncount nouns: take the plural inflection
              2. Proper nouns: names for unique individuals or places
                1. Collective nouns:A small number of nouns that refer to groups
              3. Verbs: A word that denotes an action or state of being.
                1. verbs follow nouns and may be followed in turn by adjectives, adverbs, or other nouns
                2. Adjectives: it describes or denotes the qualities of something
                  1. commonly occur between a determiner and a noun, or after be or other linking verbs, they can also follow a noun
                    1. The function of adjectives is to modify or complete nouns.
                      1. Two adjective types:
                        1. attributive, which precede nouns.
                          1. Ex. The old bucket sprang leak.
                          2. and predicative, which follow linking verbs
                            1. Ex. He became angry at the very thought.
                        2. Adverbs: modify verbs and contribute meaning of various sorts of sentences
                          1. Direction: Jim pointed there
                            1. Location: Isabelle shos locally
                              1. Manner: the choir sang joyfully at the auditon
                                1. Time: Soon Rachel will retire
                                2. Pronouns: refer to or replace nouns and noun phrases within a text or as direct reference to an outside situation

                                      1. Reflexive
                                        1. Possessive
                                          1. Demonstrative
                                          2. Determiners:refer to that special class of words that limit the nouns that follow them
                                            1. Articles
                                              1. Demonstratives
                                                1. Possessive determiners
                                                2. Prepositons: connect words to other parts of a sentence
                                                  1. Conjuctions: are words that join.
                                                    1. coordinating conjunctions, such as and, but, and or, which join elements that are grammatically equal
