The chapter talks about the evolution of language teaching and show to us methods that were meaninful in the history

  1. The grammar-translation method

    2. -The goal of foreign language study is to learn a language in order to read it literature.

    5. -Reading and writing were the major focus.
    6. - Vocabulary selection was based solely on reading text used, and word were thought through bilingual word list, dictionary study and memorization.
    7. - The sentence was the basic unit of teaching and language practice.
  2. Child language learning

    2. -Reading had to be thought before other skills.
    3. T. Prendergast

    5. - The first “structural syllabus” was proposed in this method.
    6. - Memorized phrases and routines were used for speaking.
    7. - I walk toward the door -> I walk.
  3. Natural Method
    1. - The spoken language was primary.

    4. Paul Passy
    5. - The findings of phonetics should be applied to teaching and to teacher training.
    6. - The learner should hear the language first, before seeing it in written form.
    7. - All the words and sentences should be practices in meaningful contexts.
  4. The Direct Method
    1. - Classroom instruction was conducted only in the target language.
