  1. Microtubules
    1. Structure: long, hollow cylinders that consist of subunits of the protein tubulin.
      1. Function :form a framework for structures such as the spindle apparatus that appears during cell division, or the whiplike organelles known as cilia and flagella
      2. Endoplastic Reticulum
        1. Function: the folding of protein molecules in sacs called cisternae and the transport of synthesized proteins in vesicles to the Golgi apparatus.
          1. Structure: A continous compartment that folds into flattened sacs and tubes
          2. Microfilaments
            1. Structure: fibers that consist primarily of subunits of the globular protein acitin.
              1. Function: they strengthen or change the shape of eukaryotic cells.
              2. Plasma Membrane
                1. Function: An outer membrane that separates the cell's contents from its environments
                  1. Structure: proteins embedded in a bilayer or attached to one of its surfaces carry out membrane functions.
                  2. Lysosomes
                    1. Function: Digests, and recycles materials
                      1. Structure: cellular organelles that contain acid hydrolase enzymes that break down waste materials and cellular debris
                      2. Nuclear Envelope
                        1. Structure: 2 lipid bilayers folded together as a single membrane, the outer boundary of the nucleus
                          1. Function: Pores in the membrane control which substances can cross
                          2. Golgi Aparatus
                            1. Function: packing proteins
                              1. Structure: sacks or folds
                              2. Nucleous
                                1. Function: Only found in eukaryotic cells, an organelle that contains the cells DNA
                                  1. Structure: double membrane
                                  2. Ribosomes
                                    1. Function: sites of protein synthesis
                                      1. Structure: attached to rough ER and free in the cytoplasm
                                      2. Intermediate Filaments
                                        1. Function: support cells and tissues, the most stable elements of the cytoskeleton
                                          1. Structure: From a framework that lends structure to cells and tissues
                                          2. Extracellular Matrix
                                            1. Structure: a complex mixture of fibrous proteins and polysaccharides
                                              1. Function: The composition and function of ECM varies by the type of cell that secrets it
                                              2. Cell Junctions
                                                1. Structure: Structures that connect a cell to other cells and to the environment
                                                  1. Function: Cells send and receive ions, molecules, or signals through some junctions.

                                                        1. Function: Plastids specialized for photosynthesis
