Verbs that consist of a verb and a particle
Verb + Adverb
When a phrasal verb consist of a verb and its adverb
No object
They got together every Monday morning
Object
*Noun - Before or after the adverb (the verb and the adverb can be separated)
1-They didn't back uo Diana. 2- They wanted to throw out Diana.
Pronoun - Between the verb and the adverb
1- They backed me up (not backed up me)
When the object is very long
1- They called off the concert, which had already been postponed twice (not called the concert, which had already been postponed twice off.
Verb + Preposition
When a phrasal verb consist of a verb and a preposition
- It always has an object - The object (noun or pronoun) always goes after the preposition (can´t be separated)
1-The rest of the group looked after Diana (not looked Diana after)
Adverb + Preposition
When the phrasal consist of three parts
-It always has an object -The object (noun or pronoun) always goes after the phrasal verb ( the three parts can´t be separated)
1- I always got on with the other members of the group 2- I came up against some problem...
Divided in
Transitive
They have a direct object
You need to fill out this form to register for the course.
Separable
You can separate the two words and put the direct object in the middle.
PICK UP: They’ll pick Rod up from school = They’ll pick him up from school
Inseparable
You can't separate the two words and put the direct object in the middle.
LOOK AFTER: I’ll look after your Ipad while you are in the restroom - NOT: I’ll look your Ipad after while you are in the restroom
Intransitive
They don't have a direct object
