      2. Nasals - The velum is lowered, which allows airflow to escape (m, n)

  1. Vertical tongue position (close-open)
    1. How close the tongue is to the roof of the mouth
      1. If the tongue is close, it is given the label close (æ)
      2. if the tongue is low in the mouth, it’s given the label open (ɪ, ʊ)
  2. Horizontal tongue position (front, mid, back)
    1. Refers to where the tongue is positioned in the vocal tract in terms of ‘at the front’ or ‘at the back’.
  3. Lip position
    1. round (u, o), spread or neutral
3. They are usually voiced and are produced without friction.
