SINGAPORE - THE RICKSHAW
  1. For the constitution there are four commonly used languages: English, Chinese, Malay and Tamil
    1. Rickshaw originates from the Japanese word jinrikisha (人力車, 人 jin = human, 力 riki = power or force, 車 sha = vehicle), which literally means "human-powered vehicle"
      1. Hand-pulled rickshaws were a major means of transport in Singapore from the 1880s to 1930s.
        1. The rickshaw was invented in Japan in the 1860s.They were considered like taxis nowadays
          1. The first rickshaws appeared in Singapore in the 1880s. Rickshaws initially came in single seater and double seater models.
            1. The Singapore streets were crowded with Rickshaw pullers. They wore shorts or baggy pants. But they often worked shirtless and bare feet under Singapore's blistering sun.
            2. 1. The rickshaw proved to be a cheaper and faster mode of transportation
              1. ADVANTAGES
                1. DISADVANTAGES
                  1. The rickshaws were banned in 1947 on humanitarian grounds
                    1. They were used to carry goods, manure and even cadavers
                      1. IMPORTED: So expensive
                        1. LOCAL: Low quality
                2. 2. They did not pollute the environment
                  1. 3. They were so cheap and popular
                    1. 4. They were used to ferry children to school or attend social gatherings
                3. TRISHAW replaced the rickshaw
              2. HISTORY
                1. VARIANT NAMES:: Jinrickshaw, jinricksha, jinrikisha, rikisha, ricksha, rikishaw
                  1. They were Used initially as private vehicles for noble families, but soon became a popular means of transport
                    1. These carriages were exported across Asia and became a common sight on the streets of larger cities
                      1. They Competed with the gharry (two-wheeled horse carriages)
                  2. CULTURAL IMPACT
                    1. Many of the poorest individuals in Singapore in the late nineteenth century were poverty-stricken, unskilled people. Sometimes called coolies, the hardworking men found that pulling a rickshaw was a new opportunity for employment
