  1. series circuits
    1. the same current passes through components in series with each other
      1. the total potential difference of the voltage supply in a series circuit is shared between the components
        1. the total potential difference of cells in a series is the sum of the potential difference of each cell
          1. for cells in series acting in the same direction the total pd is the sum of their individual pds
          2. the total resistance of components in series is equal to the sum of resistance of each component
            1. adding the resistances gives the total resistance of resistors in series
          3. parallel circuits
            1. for components in parallel
              1. the total current is the sum of the currents through the separate components
                1. the bigger the resistance of a component, the smaller the current is
                2. the potential difference is the same across each component
