Title: Our Government
  1. Big Idea 2: What is leadership?
    1. Description: Literature Circles: The students will read "A Day in the Senate" in literature circles and discuss the role and responsibilities of our government leaders.
      1. Assessment: Work Sample: The students will work in a small group to make a t-chart of qualities of a good and bad leader.
    2. Big Idea 5: Understanding different points of view
      1. Description: The student groups will select one change from their list and break into smaller groups of three. One subgroup will be for the change, the other against it. The groups will use a graphic organizer to organize their ideas and participate in a formal debate.
        1. Assessment: Debate Rubric/Self and Peer Assessment: The students will be assessed using a rubric for debate participation, as well as complete a peer assessment for their subgroups and a self assessment.
      2. Big Idea 1: Why is government important?
        1. Description: The students will read "A World Without Rules" and discuss what life would be like without rules/government.
          1. Assessment: Work Sample: The students will work with a partner to complete a cause and effect graphic organizer about not having rules based on the reading/their experiences. The students will share their ideas with the class.
        2. Big Idea 4: Communicating ideas for change
          1. Description: The students will work in small groups of six to create a list of things they would change or add to school.
            1. Assessment: Work Sample: The list of ideas on post-it notes
          2. Big Idea 3: How actions cause change
            1. Description: The students will discuss how their actions can bring about change.
              1. Assessment: Writing Prompt: The students will write a letter to the principal explaining why they are for or against her decision to ban basketballs, football, and soccer balls at school. Students may use a graphic organizer to help organize their ideas/plan their writing.
