  1. Digital devices can connect and share data with each other
    1. Data cable connection
      1. most common method of this is USB cable
        1. Most mobile phones and media players can connect by USB cable to a computer running the correct software
        2. Bluetooth
          1. Technology allowing devices to communicate with each othe rwirelessly
            1. Devices communicate over short distances using radio waves
              1. Most modern devices are Bluetooth enabled
                1. Bluetooth dongle can be attached to a computer as a peripheral
                  1. Devices can connect to a Bluetooth enabled peripherals such as printers or speakers
                  2. Wi-Fi
                    1. Another method of wireless connection using radio waves
                      1. Wi-Fi enabled devices can communicate over longer distances.
                        1. Most modern devices are Wi-Fi enabled.
                          1. allows devices to connect with a computer network and the Internet
                            1. allows devices to connect to Wi-Fi enabled peripherals e.g. printers, speakers
                            2. when two devices, e.g. a media player and computer, are connected they can automatically exchange data
                              1. synchronisation
                              2. cloud synchronisation
                                1. people have more Wi-Fi enabled devices e.g. laptops, smartphones
                                  1. cloud computing services e.g. Apple's iCloud, allow them to store all their data files such as music and films, on a remote server
                                    1. when using iCloud, if you download a song to one of your devices, it's automatically downloaded to all of your devices
                                      1. this saves having to synchronise multiple devices with the computer
                                        1. files can then be accessed from all the digital devices you have
                                        2. cloud computing -a type of Internet based computing
                                    2. WORKED EXAMPLE Explain why Simon would want to 'synchronise' his media player
                                      1. Synchronisation allows two connected devices to swap data automatically. Simon can set the software, for example iTunes, to update his media player with new or changed items on the computer. If he has downloaded a new music file to the the computer or changed some contact details, then the software will automatically update the media player. The computer can also update the media player's software if a new update has been downloaded to the computer.
