The Gunpowder Plot - 1605
An attempt by Catholics to overthrow James and his courtiers
The plan was to assassinate James and his 9-year-old daughter would be installed as Catholic Head of State
Had experienced members of the military in the group, including Guy Fawkes who had 10 years experience fighting in the Spanish Netherlands
When the plot was discovered, Fawkes, who was guarding the 36 barrels of gunpowder, was arrested quickly
When they discovered the plot was found out, the members fled London, trying to gain support along the way, but some were shot and killed
At their trial, 8 of the surviving members were tried for treason, hung, drawn and quartered
