        1. By 1914, all the major powers were linked by an alliance system
          1. Made it more likely a war would start
            1. Relationships or friendships based on shared interest

              1. The belief that nations are entitled to a strong army
                1. Nations began to compete with each other
                  1. Trying to get stronger, better armies
                    1. Building new army technologies & weapons
                      1. Germany competing with the UK to build battleships
                        1. Competing to out-do each other
                          1. Made other nations nervous
                        2. 19th Century Imperialism
                          1. The policy of expanding a countries territories
                            1. Though diplomacy or force
                            2. All the great powers competed to expand their empire
                              1. British feared Germany's movements in Africa
