Majority Influence
Evaluation of ASCH
Validity
1. No INTEREST in experiment
2. Weren't BOTHERED if they got it wrong
3. So were MORE willing to conform
4. Therefore it LACKS validity, in other situations it may have been different (eg requiring opinion)
5. PRESSURE
In front of STRANGERS-didn't want to look STUPID so MORE likely to conform
Ethics
DECEIVING
1.Didn't know they were being tricked
2. Didn't know other P's were CONFEDERATES
3. But the couldn't have been told
Because study would have been ruined
4. Overcome by a full debriefing
Real World Apps
JURIES
1. FIRST vote determines outcome in over 95% of cases
2.TANFORD & PENROD
Suggest CONFORMITY is a major influence in jury DECISION making
Child Of Its Time?
1.It is possible the findings were unique to 1 culture (all MALE AMERICANS)
2.Conducted in a period of ANTI- COMMUNISM (scared to be different)
Perrin & Spencer repeated-got different results.
Suggests that the main reason for conformity is the CONTEXT and PEOPLE
E.g. S&E students are more CONFIDENT so are LESS likely to conform whereas YoP are MORE likely conform because they don't want to get in TROUBLE
PERRIN and SPENCER
1. Repeated ASCHs experiment in ENGLAND in 1970's using SCIENCE & ENGINEERING students
Only ONE conformed response out of 396 trials
2. Also used YOUTHS on PROBATION and probation WORKERS as CONFEDERATES
This time the results were SIMILAR to ASCH
Collectivist Cultures
Group orientated so more likely to conform- social behaviour is determined by goals set as a whole (ie family)
Individualist Cultures
More independent so less likely to conform
