Quote Analysis of Joe
  1. 'a fair man, with curls of flaxen hair on each side of his smooth face'
    1. Child-like appearance shows his innocence and honesty.
      1. 'flaxen hair' Angelic
      2. 'eyes of such a very undecided blue that they seemed to have somehow got mixed with their own whites.'
        1. He is an uncertain person, like how he is unsure with words due to his lack of an education
          1. 'drawback on my learning'
          2. White symbolises purity in British culture
            1. Blue eyes are associated with children and babies, so its a symbol of honesty, purity and innocence
            2. 'He was a mild, good-natured, sweet-tempered, easy-going, foolish, dear fellow'
              1. Pip's thoughts on Joe
                1. Fair in appearance and nature
                  1. The qualities of a true gentleman
                  2. 'a sort of Hercules in strength, and also in weakness'
                    1. Masculine, strong
                      1. Hercules' wife is tricked into killing him. Mrs Joe controls Joe and he submits to her. Both are overruled by the minds of women
                      2. 'In his working clothes, Joe was a well-knit, characteristic-looking blacksmith'
                        1. Fits his working-class role and station in life
                        2. 'in his holiday clothes, he was more like a scarecrow in good circumstances'
