Alkenes= used to make chemicals such as plastic, have double bonds
Fractional Distillation
1) heat up the crude oil mixture
2) mixture boils and each fraction will boil at a certain temperature depending on its hydrocarbon length
3) gas passes through the condenser and cools down (gas turns to liquid)
How do we meet demand?
Cracking
Cracking is breaking down long, less in demand fractions such as decane using thermal
decompostion into shorter, more useful chains and ethane gas like octane
Thermal Decompostion
This means 'to break down using heat'
Monomer=a molecule that can be bonded together
with other identical molecules to form a polymer
Polymerisation= a process that combines
monomers to form a polymer
