Nuclear Physics
  1. Atomic Structure
    1. A small central nucleus composed of protons and neutrons, surrounded by electrons
      1. Relative mass and electric charges
        1. a.m.u. = atomic mass unit
        2. An atom has no overall electric charge, as the no. of protons = no. of electrons
          1. If an atom loses or gains electrons it becomes a charged ION
            1. THE PERIODIC TABLE

              Anexos:

              1. Atoms will always have the same no's of protons, but different isotopes have different no's of neutrons
              2. Radiation
                1. Radiation is the high-energy particles or waves that a decaying atom 'spits out'
                  1. This is a RANDOM process
                  2. There are some substances that give out radiation from the (unstable) nuclei of their atoms all the time
                    1. RADIOACTIVE SUBSTANCES
                    2. There are 3 different types of radiation
                      1. Alpha
                        1. 'helium nucleus' - 2 protons and 2 neutrons
                          1. 1
                          2. Beta
                            1. an electron from the nucleus
                              1. Both deflected by electric and magnetic fields (gamma is not)
                              2. Gamma
                                1. electromagnetic radiation from the nucleus
                              3. Background radiation is around us all the time
                              4. Nuclear FIssion
                                1. The splitting of an atomic nucleus
                                  1. There are two fissionable substances in common use in nuclear reactors
                                    1. Uranium-235
                                      1. Plutonium-239
                                      2. 1. The nucleus absorbs a neutron
                                      3. Nuclear Fusion
