Karl Marx and religion
  1. Marxism
    1. Sees society as divided into two classes, the upper class and working class (exploitation of the working class)
      1. Says that the working class will eventually realise they are being exploited which will cause a revolution to overthrow the capitalist society
      2. Religion
        1. Karl Marx sees religion as a feature of a class divided society
          1. Marx believes that there would be no need for religion if society had no classes
            1. Marxists see religion as a tool which helps to keep working class people happy with their unfair situation in life in favour of the upper class
              1. They see it as a drug which is used to drown out lifes problems
              2. See religion as misleading the lower classes into thinking that their suffering in this life will be rewarded in the next life thus making them accept unfair decisions made by the upper class
              3. "Religious suffering is, at one and the same time, the expression of real suffering and a protest against real suffering. Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people."
