Resumo de Recurso
Organelles
Ultrastructure
The detail inside of a cell as revealed by an electron microscope
Most organelles are found in both plants and animals.
They have a specific funtion in each type of cell. (Division of labour)
Membrane Bound
Cytoskeleton
The network of protein fibres found within cells which give structure and shape to a cell.
Also help a cell move and moves organelles around the cell.
Flagella & Cilia
Structurally the same in eukaryotes
Different in prokaryotes, true motor which moves them. Uses energy in the form of ATP.
Hair-like extensions from the surface of the cell.
Vesicles & Vacuoles
Membrane bound sacs found in cells.
Vesicles are used to transport substances around the cells
In plants, a large cell vacuole helps maintain cell stability and keeps the cell turgid.
Cell Wall
Only in plants.
Outside of the cell surface membrane, made of cellulose.
Held rigid by the pressure of fluid within the cell, supports cell and whole plant
Nucleus
Largest organelle in a cell.
Houses all the cell's genetic information.
When stained shows dark patches called chromatin.
Surrounded by nuclear envelope which has alot of holes called nuclear pores.
Dense spherical structure called nucleolus inside.
Endoplasmic Reticulum
Series of flattened membrane bound sacs called cisternae. Continues with the outer nuclear membrane.
Smooth ER
No ribosomes
Synthesises lipids
Rough ER
Studded with ribsosomes
Transport & Synthesis of proteins
Golgi Apparatus
Stack of membrane-bound, flattened sacs.
Recieves proteins from the ER and modifies them.
Packages the modified proteins for transport.
Mitochondria
Spherical or sausage shaped.
2 Membranes seperated by a fluid filled space.
Chloroplasts
2 membranes seperated by a fluid filled space.
Inner membrane is continuous with a network of flattened membrane sacs called thylakoids.
Site of photosynthesis, convert light into carbohydrates.
Lysosomes
Spherical sacs surrounded by a single membrane, contains powerful digestive enzymes.
Non-membrane Bound
Ribosome
Some are free, some are bound to ER
Contain 2 subunits, site of protein synthesis.
Act as assembly line to assemble amino acids from instructions sent from the nucleus.
Centrioles
Small tubes of protein fibres.
Take part in cell division, forming spindles which move chromosomes.
