    1. An index that tells how clean or unhealthy the air is, and the associated health effects on the population.
      1. Air pollutans
        1. Ozone
          1. A gas found in the air we breathe.
            1. Good ozone
              1. Present in the Earth’s upper atmosphere; 6 to 30 miles above the Earth’s surface.
                1. Shields us from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays.
              2. Bad ozone
                1. Forms near the ground when pollutants react chemically in sunlight.
              3. Heat and sunlight increase ozone formation.
                1. Risks
                  1. When active outdoors
                    1. Ozone affects the lungs and respiratory system.
              4. Particle Pollution
                1. Mixture of solids and liquid droplets.
                  1. Fine particles
                    1. Small particles. Major sources : motor vehicles, wood burning, industrial and combustion processes.
                    2. Coarse particles
                      1. Sources: crushing or grinding operations, and dust stirred up by vehicles traveling on roads.
                    3. Health effects for people with heart and lung diseases
                      1. Chest pain, palpitations, shortness of breath, fatigue, respiratory infections, etc.
                    4. CO
                      1. Odorless, colorless gas. It forms when the carbon in fuels does not completely burn.

                          1. It reduces the amount of oxygen reaching the body’s organs and tissues.
                          2. Highest during cold weather
                          3. SO2
                            1. A colorless, reactive gas, is produced when sulfur-containing fuels such as coal and oil are burned.
                              1. Found near large industrial complexes.

                                  1. Irritant gas that is removed by the nasal passages.

                                1. Air quality is acceptable. this range may pose a moderate health concern for a very small number of individuals.
                                2. 151- 200 Unhealthy
                                  1. Sensitive groups may experience more serious health effects.
                                  2. 101-150 Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups
                                    1. Sensitive groups may experience health effects.
                                    2. 201- 300 Very Unhealthy
                                      1. Everyone may experience more serious health effects.
                                      2. 301- 500 Hazardous
                                        1. The entire population is even more likely to be affected by serious health effects.
                                      3. Measured using standard formulas developed by Environmental Protection Agency.
