Question 2: How does your media product
represent particular social groups?
In my music magazine the social group that has been displayed is
mainly young people from white British/European backgrounds.
My social group choice has been influenced by my case study - magazine 'Q'.
The statistics show that 83.8% of the readers are 15-44 years of age. This
shows Q’s ability to make the magazine appeal to a wide range of ages and
social groups. Q does this by featuring currently popular artists like Adele
and classic artists like Madonna and John Lennon, they even feature artists
that are disbanded or deceased as some issues are dedicated to them.
Gender
I have tried to portray females not as just
objects that are pleasing to look at, but present
them in a much better lighting and take it
further than just sexy pictures.
The audience of my magazine is reflected through
the images that I use in my magazine. Although I
have more female models than male, my magazine
is aimed equally both genders. I have made it equal
because I want my magazine do not separate
genders. I have both female, male, and any other
people that may not classify themselves in a
specific gender.
Ethnicity
My target audience will come from mainly white background, as
indie genre in general involves mostly white artist; therefore the
audience will be mostly white - so that they can relate.
However, at the same time I will try
not discriminate non-white
nationalities.
Location
The location for my target audience is
in the UK, London. Most of the people I
have mentioned in my music magazine
are located in London.
I chose London because media industries and
production of magazine are highly distributed and
therefore it will provide me & my magazine a range
of different opportunities.
In addition, it will increase the
chances that my magazine will
be popular across the UK.
Occupation/Income
The social group that I have
represented come from a working
background.
They are either in education/their first
jobs or fully employed.
The family of the social group will
have an average income.
Clothing
The clothing that my model is wearing are a
regular clothing that doesn't affect the
representation of any young person.
In fact, the simple clothing of the main artist in
my front cover helps the audience to relate more,
as they would be pleased to see a 'star' wearing
clothes that they themselves are wearing.
Therefore creating a much
stronger connection between the
reader and the artist.
Overall Representation
My overall representation of the social group
included in my music magazine is definitely a
positive one.
I have represented a social group
of young adults as being highly
talented, creative and unique.
Also, I have presented social group of my
music magazine as being determined and
passionate about music; which is why many of
them want to pursue their music related
careers.
