Resumo de Recurso
Enzymes
definition: a biological catalyst (causing change/ to start), that speeds up chemical reactions by lowering the amount of activation energy
enzymes are protiens (amino acids)
every enzyme is specific for a specific chemical reaction / substrate
Substrate: the reactants an enzyme works on
-ase
Substrate/enzyme lactose/lactase sucrose/sucrase carbonic acid/carbonic anhydrase
Lock and key method
Lock: enzyme key: substrate
enzyme + substrate --> Enzyme substrate compex --> enzyme + product
enzymes are not used up or destroyed; they are at the begining and the end of the chemical reaction
Optimal Conditions for enzymes
specific temperatures and pH's
Denature: lose its function due to change of shape
When an enzyme is at the wrong temperature and pH, it denatures (breaks down) and loses its conformation (shape)
Result: the substrate can not fit into the active sight --> no product is made
