Electrolysis
  1. Molten Salts
    1. At the anode: metal
      1. At the cathode: Non-metal
      2. Salt solution
        1. At the cathode: More reactive metals stay as ions in solution. Instead, H+ ions accept electrons forming Hydrogen molecules
          1. At the anode: Non-metal except sulfates in which case O2
          2. CATIONS(+) --> CATHODE(-)
            1. ANIONS(-) --> ANODE(+)
              1. The process in which electricity is used to break compounds down into their elements
                1. Industrially important as it is the only extraction method available for the most reactive metals
                2. Electrolytes - liquids which conduct electricity by movement of ions. When they conduct the ionic compound is split up
                  1. E.g. Molten salts, solutions of salts in water, solutions of acids, solutions of alkalis
                  2. Rules for electroplating an object
                    1. The object must be made at the cathode
                      1. the electrolyte must be a solution of a salt of the required metal
                        1. the anode must be made of a strip of the metal
                        2. During electrolysis
                          1. the oxidation of non-metal ions always takes place at the anode
                            1. the reduction of a metal or hydrogen ions always take place at the cathode
