TOPIC 6
Separable Phrasal Verbs
The phrasal verbs are a group of words made with a verb and another word, that is a preposition or adverb.
Example: Get: Come into possession of something. Up: It’s a preposition indicating movement from a lower to a higher position.
They can be separated or not, depending on the sentence, and the object. Check the following chart:
FORM: Verb+ particle (Sometimes it is a preposition or an adverb)
Example: Look for: Seek something.
Passive Voice and Adverbs with Passive
In the active voice the action of the verb falls on the subject while in the passive voice the action of the verb falls on the object.
Example: The door was opened
Form: Subject + finite form of to be + Past Participle
The Simple Past Passive
We only use the passive when we are interested in the object or when we do not know who made the action.
We can only form a passive sentence from an active sentence when there is an object in the active sentence.
Form: Verb to be (was/were) + Past participle Example: The house was painted.
TOPIC 7
Reported Requests and Commands
Reported requests and commands are used to explain an order or a request that a person made to another.
Example: Go to bed / She told him to go to bed. Don’t smoke / He told them not to smoke.
Reported questions:
in reported questions we need to change the question into a positive sentence.
Example: Direct speech: “Where do you live?” Reported speech: He asked me where I lived.
Reported Statements and Questions
Are used to describe something that another person said before.
Example: Direct speech: “I like apple cakes”. Reported speech: She says that she likes apple cakes.
Defining Relative Clauses
Are used to express more information about something or someone.
To clarify which person or thing we are talking about, we can use a relative pronoun like who, which, whose or that.
TOPIC 9
TOPIC 8
Non-defining Relative Clauses
They give extra information about something; the information given is about a noun or noun phrase
it uses commas at the beginning and at the end of the non-defining relative clause.
Example: My friend Alicia, who lives in Mexico city, is coming to Monterrey to stay with me next week.
