Trade was expanding rapidly as the New
World offered many new opportunities for
trade.
Conflict with Spain and the Netherlands had hit the cloth
and wool trade hard, meaning it was vital for England to
find new trading opportunities.
Reports from travellers suggested enormous
rewards and treasures such as silver and
tobacco. Other countries such as Spain had
gotten rich quick from silver mines in Peru.
Triangular Trade
During Elizabeth's reign English merchants began to exploit
the ancient African slave trade.
The infamous trade route developed on a
trans-Atlantic scale.
John Hawkins first bought slaves in 1562, transported the across the Atlantic and sold
them to Spanish Colonists. With the proceeds he bought ginger, animal hides, sugar
and some pearls, making hge profits. he then repeated the journey in 1564.
Adventure
Some young Elizabethan men went on voyages of
discovery and exploration in the hopes to find
wealth and fortune. The accounts of these
voyages persuaded people to further venture into
the unknown.
New Technology
Navigation was becoming increasingly more precise,
meaning voyages were safer, quicker and more precise.
For example, mathematician Thomas Harriot invented
a simpler way to workout the direction you need to go
in, by using the sun, in 1584.
By the 15th century quadrants and astrolabes were more
commonly used to accurately workout were to go using the
stars.
Why did Drake circumnavigate the globe?
Revenge
Drake's main purpose was to raid Spanish colonies to get revenge,
after a voyage in 1567-8. In 1567-8, Drake joined John Hawkins on
a third trans-Atlantic voyage. During which the Spanish attacked
their boats at St Juan de Ulua, killing 325men.
Money
Although there are political reasons for the
circumnavigation, there were still many great profits to
be made to and from the journey to the Americas. Due
to many investing in his expedition at court Drake was
able to create a massive haul of treasure at around
£500.000.000 in todays moeny, making him and his
investors incredibly rich.
What was the significance of Drake's circumnavigation?
England was a sea-faring nation
Drake's crew were only the second crew in history to
have achieved such a feat, this was a great boost to
English morale and established the reputation of
English ships and sailors as being among the finest in
the world.
Encouraging explorations
From far travels they gathered useful information
about the Americas, as well as keeping thorough logs
of their voyage to be written up and shared with other
English sailors
Nova Albion
In June 1579, the Golden Hind was in urgent need of
repair after having explored the furthest reaches of
North America's Pacific coast. Drake landed in a bay, and
the native Americans treated the English with great
hospitality, and performed a ceremony. Drake then
declared Elizabeth 1 to be its sovereign and named it
Nova Albion.
