Banking systems and money
1. Customers can: add new accounts
  1. add/withdraw money to any of the accounts
    1. pay bills by cheque
      1. Ask for a bank statement
        buy items online/in store using debit cards
2. Customer data stored on banks large database
3. send confirmation emails to customers after transaction
4. Main task is to keep data secure and make sure no fraud is performed
5. cheques
  1. used by older people as they cannot remeber PINs
  2. Banks threaten to stop using cheques as it is expensive for them
  3. cheques has details such as
    1. The date
      1. Person/business being paid
        the amount in words
        amount in numbers
        signature
6. Magnetic ink character recognition
  1. 3 items encoded at bottom of every cheque
    1. cheque no.
      1. branch sort code
        customer account number
  2. ink is magnetized,read and inputted into the computer very quickly
  3. advantages
    1. large amount read quickly
    2. doesnt matter if they are crumpled or dirty
    3. characters are difficult to forge
    4. disadvantages
      1. expensive equipment
      2. very limited no. characters can be used
7. Electronic funds transfer
  1. credit card
    1. money transferred from credit card company's account to shops account. customer than arranges payment with the credit card company
  2. Debit card
    1. money directly taken from cutomers bank account to shops account
Home banking
1. can carry out basic banking tasks from home such as:
  1. view a statement of the account
    1. transfer money between accounts
    2. Bills can be paid
      1. set up/alter direct debits
        apply for loans/morgages
  2. disadvantages
    1. worried of security breaches
    2. lack of personal touch
    3. some banking services are not availble online
Cashless society
1. Less people carry money with them, instead they carry credit/debit cards
2. drugs no longer sold on the streets
3. no money theft
4. no bank robberies/shop keeper attacks
E-commerce
1. Buying good electronically
  1. Large variety of goods available ready to be delivered to your door
    1. Avoid tine/expense of travelling to stores
      1. Businesses that work online don't need to pay for overheads
        Businesses can expand their market easily
2. long delivery times
  1. cannot physically inspect goods
    1. worried about personal data security
Payroll
1. input database/timesheets containing employees details
  1. calculated amount of money needed to pay the employee by the amount of hours they have worked (plus overtime)
    1. outputs printed payslips or email the employee their payslip
      1. updates amount of payments this year + total tax paid this year
        Data sent to BACS system so money can be transferred to employees bank account
        Reports are outputs summarising the companies pay for the period and update accounting system
