        Produces Red Blood Cells

        Stores Fat
    4. All give structure to the bones
3. Function of skeleton and bones
  1. Protection
    1. Bone is rigid and tough so it can protect soft, delicate organs
    2. Hard and flexible
    3. E.g. Skull protects brain
  2. Support
    1. Creates a frame for other body parts to use (hang off)
    2. E.g. Without a back bone, we would not be able to stay straight and upright
    3. E.g. Femur supports the leg
  3. Movement
    1. Bones are rigid and solid
    2. Muscles can be attached to them via tendons
    3. Joints
  4. Contains marrow
    1. Helps make blood
    2. Keeps bone alive

1. 3 Types
  1. Hinge
    1. Knee
      1. Move in only one direction
    2. Elbow
      1. Moves in only one direction
  2. Fixed
    1. Skull- cannot move
  3. Ball and Socket
    1. Hip
      1. Move in pretty much any direction
2. A joint is where two bones meet
3. Help you move easier
4. Held together by Ligaments
5. Cartilage prevents the bones from rubbing together
6. Synovial Fluid keeps the cartilage slippery
Muscles
1. Ligaments hold bone to bone
2. Tendons hold bones to muscles
3. Antagonistic Muscles
  1. They are a pair of muscles that work against each other
    1. One muscle contracts (shortens) while the other relaxes (lengthens)
      1. Or Vice Versa
  2. Attached to bone through tendons so they can pull on bone
  3. One muscle pulls the bone in one direction and the other muscle pulls it in the other direction, causing the joint to move
4. Muscles only pull and not push so that is why they can come in pairs...
