        2. reaction with oxygen: redox reaction
          1. e.g. 2Ca (s) + O2 (g) ------> 2CaO (s)
            1. Metal + oxygen forms Metal oxide
          2. reaction with water
            1. Metal + water forms Metal hydroxide and hydrogen
              1. observation: solid dissolves
              2. oxides/hydroxides + acid -----> base + water
                1. observation: solid dissolves
                2. thermal Decomposition: decomposed by heat to form metal oxide and carbon dioxide gas
                  1. uses of hydroxides
                    1. calcium hydroxide: used as lime to neutralise acid soils
                      1. magnesium hydroxide: used to relieve indigestion, by neutralising stomach acid
