  1. How is Data represented?
    1. 1 and 0s
      1. hold a value of a power of two
        1. these go up to 255
          1. anything over this value is an overflow erroe
      2. on and off
        1. a computer is made up of digital transistors
          1. They can only be 1 (on) or 0 (off)
        2. Binary
          1. base 2 number system
        3. Why do computers need binary?
          1. represented in bytes
            1. can store data
              1. can communicate with other devices and software
              2. basic state of a computer system.
                1. Needed for 2 reasons
                  1. Two clear states, that are reliable and available for computers to work with
                    1. Decreases the need for space, electronic energy and cost.
                  2. Computer transfers electronic components
                  3. binary to denary
                    1. denary is a bade 10 number system
                      1. how to go from binary to denary
                        1. put a column of base 2 numbers
                          1. 128, 64, 32, 16, 8, 4, 2, 1
                            1. you find the highest number that goes into A
                              1. if the value is 84 then the largest number is 64
                                1. put a one into the 64 column
                                  1. then you work out the next value
                                    1. 84 - 64 = 20
                                      1. then 20 goes into 16
                                      2. then you do 20 - 16= 4
                                        1. so you but a 1 in the 4 section
                                          1. then your binary value is 01010100
                          2. left shift and right shift
                            1. Multiplication is known as a left shift Division is known as a right shift
                              1. If you shift right by one place, it divides the number by 2
                                1. shifting one place to the right multiplies by 2
