What are the cultural traditions that contribute to being British?The UK is a multicultural society. Many people from all over the world have moved into the UK and brought their cultural traditions with them. Two examples of cultural traditions that have been widely adopted across the UK are:Settlers from the Caribbean brought their tradition of street carnivals to London (such as the Notting Hill Carnival.)Immigrants from India and Pakistan brought their tradition for hot, spicy, food that had already been popular with the British in India for 200 years. There are many other cultural traditions in Britain that people take for granted but miss if they go to live in another country (such as school uniforms, remembrance Sunday, Mothers' day and the English pub.)What are the main values that contribute to being British?Values are the moral principles or accepted standards held by an individual or a group of people. To find out what official British values are, we should study the rules that govern the actions of public bodies connected with the law, justice, communication and education. The rule of law: This means that the law applies to everyone.Personal freedom: People should be free to benefit from their hard work, travel freely, and say and write what they like as long as it does not harm others. Business should be free to run their organisations without the undue interference from the government. Artists, play-writers, authors ect should be free to take risks and try new things. Everyone can criticise the government, put forward new ideas and make fun of celebrities, politicians and even religious leaders. Tolerance and respect for diversity: Tolerance and respect for diversity are linked to personal freedom. In the last 300 years in the UK many people have come to the UK to escape mistreatment in their home country. The UK have an international reputation for accepting people from different religious faiths and cultural traditions. Equal opportunity: This means that everyone should have the same chances to achieve their ambitions as everyone else. Women should have the same chances as men. It shouldn't matter of your race, culture, religion or age. Representative democracy: One of the main values in the UK means that everyone has a right to a say in how the country is run. Elections are fair and each persons vote is a secret. Why do people migrate from one place to another?Push factors to why people would want to leave their home: Fear for their lives (war, terrorism or natural disasters.) Discrimination. No work or poorly paid. Famine. Disease or pollution. Lack of educational opportunities. High cost of living. Pull factors to why people would want to move to another place: Peaceful place. Good record of human rights. Employment available. High standard of living. Other member's of their family or ethnic group live there. Good health care and education.
