How are they different from the leisure activities you enjoy? 道=spiritual paths of artistic discipline 茶道 (ちゃどう) = way of the tea -handed down from tea masters to the warrior class in the Edo Period. -Spirit of Tea teachings: 和(わ)= harmony; 敬(けい)= respect; 清(せい)= purity; 寂(じゃく)= tranquility-highly values for its teachings in discipline, respect, peacefulness and quiet in the hectic modern world. 書道 (しょどう/おしゅうじ) = way of writing/calligraphy-teaches physical and spiritual discipline-practice starts at the beginning of elementary school-contests all over Japan 華道 (かどう) = flower arranging-better known as 生け花(いけばな)-demands focus, practice and respect for the materials -traditionally, young women learned it before marriage since it was viewed as a practical skill 武道 (ぶどう) = the way of the warrior -trains not only the body, but also the the mind and spirit -ex. 空手(からて)、柔道 (じゅうどう)= 'gentle way' 、合気道(あいきどう)= 'the way of the matching spirits'-剣道(けんどう)=the way of the sword; is the oldest Other traditional past times:-俳句(はいく) or わか (traditional poetry)-日本舞踊 (にほんぶよう)(traditional Japanese dance) Traditional Japanese past times tend to strengthen bodies and spirit.
