Course: Social Studies Grade: 5G Unit: The Role of Government and Responsible Citizenship Lesson title: Research on wind farms from different perspectives Ministry Expectations B1. Application: assess responses of governments in Canada to some significant issues, and develop plans of action for government and citizens to address social and environmental issues B2. Inquiry: use the social studies inquiry process to investigate Canadian social and/or environmental issues from various perspectives Lesson agenda (what you might write on the board) - Split class into set groups - Introduction to research (in library-teacher will model the research process first) - Hand out student materials - Go over dot jot notes - Students begin research Materials - Is it fair? Posters - Info on wind turbines - Dot jot note outline/lined paper - Clipboards/pencils - Debate group info sheets - Copy of article summary - Spatial journal handout Prior knowledge (what you would expect students to already know to benefit from this lesson) - Some knowledge of advantages/disadvantages of wind farms - Some knowledge of the issue of wind turbines as Ostrander point, PEC Teacher notes (if needed) -Display: - Map of Canada - Bibliography poster - Advatnages/disadvantages poster Key questions -What are the different perspectives on wind energy? (Each group will be focusing on one perspective. Groups will share perspectives during later lesson).
