Why the Internet Was Created In 1957, Sputnik, the first artificial satellite, launched into space The US was concerned that USSR would launch missiles into space, so they created ARPA to coordinate science and research (Modern-day DARPA) This was the starting point from the modern-day internet.

Beginnings of the Internet In 1962, Paul Baran came up with packet switching. This allowed larger files to be broken up into smaller chunks and transferred to their destination. They were put back together at their destination. In 1969, the ARPANet was created. It was PHYSICAL network Wires connected four universities.This included the University of California in Los Angeles, Stanford, The University of California in Santa Barbara, and the University of Utah. This network transmitted at 50 kilobits per second. In 1972, Ray Tomlinson created the first email program. The speed was still 50 kilobits per second, and the internet had 23 hosts.

New Protocols Introduced In 1973, Vint Cerf and Bob Khan introduced TCP/IP. Vint Cerf is known as the "Father of the Internet" because he coined the phrase. In 1976, Robert Metcalfe developed the Ethernet Cable In 1983, the University of Wisconsin developed the Domain Name System. This allowed English terms to be converted into IP Addresses The speed is still 50 kilobits per second using radio and satellite connections. There are 111 hosts on the internet.

T1 Lines Deployed The National Science Foundation built new cables to transmit data called T1 Lines in 1985 In 1988, The ease of use and speed of the internet encouraged more businesses and universities to use it At this time, the T1 Lines are fully deployed but the Internet is almost at its peak capacity The speed now is 1.5 MB per second There are 56,000 hosts on the internet

HTML and HTTP developed Tim Berners-Lee created HTML, HTTP in 1991. He was called the "Father of the World Wide Web." HTML is used to make webpages and hyperlinks HTTP is the protocol used to transfer HTML At this time T3 Lines are fully deployed. The speed is 45 MB per second with satellite connections. There are 617,000 hosts by 1991. In 1992 the backbones of the T3 lines were fully deployed. There are now 1,136, 000 hosts at this point.

At this point there are 2,056,000 hosts on the internet In 1994, the World Wide Web becomes commercialized when Pizza Hut offers ordering their pizza online In 1994, the first cyberbank opened Home computers are now prevalent in households
