Hope in Great Gatsby Essay (is it the most important aspect of the novel?):Intro: Hope important, the reality it's followed by is more significant Contextual themes are more significant = Gender, Class (Great Depression), but always link back to hope Greed, people trying for what they can't have Green Light: "single green light" "Single" to emphasise its importance Gatsby "reaching out", makes it metaphorical for someone trying to achieve their dreams The sea in between = make it impossible to "reach out" (Wouldn't be able to swim) Represents hope that Daisy will love him Characters: All characters end up dissatisfied with life Gatsby = Loves Daisy, seems somewhat forceful upon Daisy and submissive ... Despite knowing she was a married man, he tries to tare her away without no guilt or fear ... Ends up dying because of Daisy, who "retreats back into her money and carelessness" ... More greed, than hope Got what he deserved Myrtle = Puts up an exaggerated persona of a middle class lady ... In reality, she is from the Valley of Ashes ... Urges to be a part of a more luxurious community ... Ends up dying (hit by car ... symbolises wealth ... Ironic) ... More greed then hope Context: Great Depression = Valley of Ashes, People moving to California, hoping on better jobs and lifestyle (Relate to Grapes of Wrath) George Wilson = Described using adjectives which describe a ghost ... Tom looks down on George Immigration = Part of novel where Black African Americans were in a wealthy car Shows social mobility
