Precursors to Cubism

Fauvism: a French style of painting derived by early twentieth century modern artists whose works emphasised strong colours that hold emotive qualities opposed to depicting a realistic image that Impressionism posed. Important Fauvist artists include Henri Matisse, who painted Woman with a Hat, in 1905.  Fauvism was "Concerned with the emotional impact of pure colour"  

Paul Cézanne: 1839-1906 Central subject matter was Mont Sainte Victoire  Simplified bjects, and looked at the underlying structure of reality.  "Everything in nature in modelled after the sphere, the cone, the cylinder.
