Fracture Healing Stages

The 1st stage of fracture healing is Hematoma Fracture Callus Remodeling( Hematoma, Fracture, Callus, Remodeling ) Occurs within the the first 72hrs after injury. Bleeding creates a hematoma that surrounds the ends of the bone fragments.

The second stage of fracture healing is Ossification Hematoma Granulation Tissue Callus Formation( Ossification, Hematoma, Granulation Tissue, Callus Formation ) where active phagocytosis absorbs the products of local necrosis.

The third stage of fracture healing consists of Remodeling Consolidation Fracture Hematoma Callus Formation( Remodeling, Consolidation, Fracture Hematoma, Callus Formation ) as minerals and new bone matrix are deposited in the osteoid, an unorganized network of bone is formed and woven about the fracture parts.

The fourth stage of fracture healing consists of Bone Deformity Ossification Fracture Hematoma Granulation Tissue( Bone Deformity, Ossification, Fracture Hematoma, Granulation Tissue ) also known as bone remodeling.

The fifth stage of fracture healing consists of Callus Formation Consolidation Ossification Granulation Tissue( Callus Formation, Consolidation, Ossification, Granulation Tissue ) when bone fragments are closed.

The sixth stage of bone repair consists of Remodeling Granulated Tissue Fracture Hematoma Callus Formation( Remodeling, Granulated Tissue, Fracture Hematoma, Callus Formation ) as excess callus is resorbed and trabecular bone is laid down.
