Nelson Mandela was a civil rights leader of America.
Mandela fought the "apartheid "system in South Africa.
He got his name "Nelson" from his father.
He studied Politics in college.
He was a member of the African National Congress.
First he adopted Mahatma Gandhi's approach of non violence to fight apartheid.
Then he changed his mind and supported the use of bombs to kill people in order to fight the system.
He spent almost 37 years in prison.
In the 1994 elections all races in South Africa could vote.
He always tried to avoid a civil war in spite of all the problems in the country.
When he was in jail he always refused to bend on his principles in order to be released.
He died in December 5th 2013
