Canada's First Nations have been in the country for at least 12000 years. They farm, hunt and organize in different tribes. One of them is Plateau.

Habitat: The Plateau People
lived in the southern
interior of BC and Alberta.
Seasonal Villages: In summer,
people live above ground in small
villages, near hunting ground; in
winter, people settle in larger, more
permanent villages.
Climate: The climate is more
continental type; the precipitation
is generally low.
Geography: The territory of
the Plateau People includes
expanse of forests and
many natural rivers and
lakes.
Vegetation: The middle
Columbia area is a steepee
of sagebrush and bunch
grass finged by yellow pine.
The upper Columbia
consisted of wooded areas.
Wildlife: Includes deer, elk,
bear and caribou.
Leaders: Each village has one
or more chiefs. They are often
inherited.
Classes: Plateau society was
communal and generally free
of classes
Enemies: The
cause of was is
usually food. For
example: the
Secwepemc
sometimes raided
Stl'atl'imx areas
for slaves or
salmon.
Roles of Leaders: The main chief is usually inherited, while
other chiefs have different roles such as hunting and
warfare due to their personal abilities and knowledge.
Weapons: In war, people usually
use spears, bows and arrows,
knives and clubs.
Food: Wild plants, salmon, deer,
elk, mountain goat.
Language: Athapascan, Interior
Salishan, Ktunaxa
Allies: They work together and
travel together in the spring-fall,
then joined with other groups to
reside in large villages
Clothing: People usually wear leather clothing
and fur caps. Some clothing are made of
tanned hides of animals, grasses and
softened bark.
Art: Rock paintings, weaving and
carving; rock paintings was made
out of red ochre pigments mixed
with animal oil or fish eggs.
Religion: The people had a strong spiritual
relationship with nature, and held animals
in high regard.
Ceremonies: The two main
ceremonies are the Winter
Guardian Spirit Dance and
Sun Dance. The ceremonies
involved a lot of music and
dancing.
Tools: The tools that the Plateau people used
were made from bone(arrow heads),
wood(nets and carvings), and stone(spears
and cutting tools).
Use of natural sources: Plateau
People were able to catch a large
number of fish when Pacific
Salmons enter the interior rivers
to spawn.
Transportation: Travel river by canoe, and
the forests by foot or horses.
Economy: Based on
seasonal hunting, fishing
and gathering.
Responsibilities: Men are
responsible for fishing and
hunting, women are responsible
for harvesting plants and and
preparing food.
Sharing: Almost
every resources
were shared
except for salmon
fishing stations
owned by
individuals.
Decisions Making: In Ktunaxa society
all the decision making power was
given to the elders because they
were considered to be very wise.
